Greek Mythology - Gods And Godesses

Greek mythology really captivates "the man" in me. Today I will whisk you into the past.  Let's start with the names of the gods and goddesses who lived on mount Olympus, which is the highest mountain on Greece. So, what are we waiting for? Hop on board the Alan Express!

We have arrived on top of the Mt.Olympus. What a beautiful clear sky! Oh, did I tell you that you don't need your raincoats or umbrellas here? That's because it never rains on Mt.Olympus. The set of grand stairs leads to the palace of the gods. Lets go to the throne room. Oh, look the gods and goddesses are waiting for us! I'll introduce them to you. Let's start with the gods.

Here is Zeus the Supreme ruler of them all. He is the Lord of the sky, and the rain. His weapon: Lightning bolt which he hurls at those who displease him. When the twelve were born, Kronos, their father and ruler of all Titans, ate them. Kronos' wife, Rhea, hid the youngest son, Zeus, in a cave to save him from being eaten. But Kronos did not know of Zeus' escape as Rhea had fed him a stone. When Zeus learned of the fate of his brothers and sisters, he immediately found Kronos and asked to be his cup bearer. Zeus then proceeded to put a potion in his father's drink that caused him to vomit Zeus' siblings. Once all of the gods were out, Zeus led them into battle against the Titans for control of the universe.

Next is Poseidon is the Lord of the sea, earthquakes and horses. He is the most powerful Olympian god, after Zeus. His majestic weapon: Trident.

This is Hades,Lord of the underworld, ruling over the dead and god of wealth. His weapon: A helmet that makes him invisible.

Over here is Ares a son of Zeus and Hera. He is God of war. His choice of weapon: Anything used in war.

This guy is Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto. His twin sister is Artemis.  He is the god of music, playing a golden lyre, of light and truth, who can not tell a lie, archery, poems, healing, sun and light. Apollo's weapon: Bow and arrow.

This here is Hephaestus, a son of Zeus and Hera. He's the god of blacksmiths, sculptors, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. His weapon: Fire.

He's Hermes, son of Zeus and Maia. He's Zeus’s messenger, the god of thieves and commerce. His choice of weapon:Caduceus.

That is the great Dionysus. He's the god of fertility and wine. His great weapon: Grape vines

There are more gods but that's all the major gods.

Onto the goddesses now.

First up is Hera, Zeus's wife and sister. She's the goddess of marriage. She also takes special care of married women.

Now to Demeter. She's the goddess of agriculture (farming),corn, grain, and harvest. She's the mother of Persephone, Hades' wife.

Over here is Athena, the goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature. She was the daughter of Zeus; Her birth was unique. She sprang full grown and clad in armour from Zeus's forehead. It goes like this: When Zeus and his brothers seized power, a prophecy predicted that a child of Metis would become greater than Zeus.To prevent this, Zeus devoured Metis not knowing that she was pregnant with Athena. Zeus then suffered head splitting headaches so terrible that he asked a fellow god to cut open his skull and out came Athena full grown and clad in armour from Zeus's forehead.

Then there is Aphrodite, the goddess of love, desire and beauty. She has a magical girdle that compels anyone she wishes to desire her. She was married to Hephaestus, but adored Ares.

Last but not least is Artemis. She was the goddess of chastity, virginity, the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin of Apollo.
